Scholar Cell Phone + Electronic Device Policy
Valence College Prep scholars may not use cell phones at school during school hours. All mobile devices must remain off and out of sight during the school day. Upon morning arrival, scholars will place their cell phones in a locked cabinet for the duration of the school day. Phones will be returned before students depart. Students who choose to bring a cell phone or other electronic mobile device to school do so at their own risk and the school does not accept responsibility for damage to, or loss of, such items.
If a family needs to contact their child during the school day, parents should contact the school via phone or email, and a staff member will deliver messages to students during breaks, lunch, electives or Advisory periods. In the case of an emergency, parents can contact the Main Office, and messages will be delivered to students immediately. In the case of unexpected events, students are allowed to use the telephone in the Main Office to contact families.
Students caught with cell phones in pockets or backpacks will have the device confiscated. Confiscated cell phones will be stored in the Dean of Students office. The first time a cell phone is confiscated, the parent will be called and the device will be returned to the student at the end of the school day. If a cell phone is confiscated again, the device must be picked up from school by a parent or guardian. Reasons for cell phone confiscation include: cell phone ringing or vibrating loudly during the school day, or cell phone visible in backpack, pocket, or desk during the school day. If a student is caught using a cell phone during the school day, it is an automatic referral to the Dean of Students and additional consequences will be issued.
The above expectations also apply to other smart electronics such as smart watches, headphones etc.
