Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend Valence College Prep?

We are a public school that welcomes all students. We accept students from anywhere in New York City and hold a lottery if we receive more applications than we have space for. The only students who receive preference in the lottery are those who live in our home district, siblings of current students, and children of school staff.

Where is Valence College Prep?

We have moved into our permanent home! We are located at 97-29 64th Rd in Rego Park, close to LeFrak City and even closer to the M/R at 63rd Dr and Q72 bus.

How much does it cost for my child to attend Valence College Prep?

Nothing. Valence College Prep is a tuition-free public charter school.

Are you part of a charter network or CMO? Who oversees the school?

Valence College Prep is not part of a charter network - we are an independent public charter school overseen by our Board of Trustees and our state authorizer, the SUNY Charter Schools Institute. However, we were founded as part of the Building Excellent Schools Fellowship, rigorous and selective year-long program for school leaders to design and prepare to lead a high-performing urban charter school. BES schools routinely outperform their surrounding districts on standardized assessments and prepare their students for success in college and life. To date, BES Fellows have founded 100+ schools in 26 cities across 15 states and the District of Columbia for 25,000+ students.

Do you have a program for students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and students who are English Language Learners (ELLs)?

Absolutely. We provide an excellent education to every student who comes through our doors, and we meet the special needs of all students who have them. We also provide special supports to ensure that students who are learning English can fully access the academic content in our classes and are provided the supports they need to develop their English skills.

Do you offer transportation to students?

Yes. Working with the New York City Office of Pupil Transportation and following its guidelines, we work to ensure that students who live further than walking distance from our school can access school bus service in the 5th and 6th grade or a MetroCard in all grades to use MTA transit.
